Tell it Right: A Family Pardon

A nonfiction work-in-progress by Sarah Layden

In 1874, an altercation in a wheat field near Independence, Indiana led to one man’s death and another man’s trial and conviction, imprisonment, and eventual pardon by the governor. Our family thought we knew the story of my great-great-grandfather’s crime. But research and archival documents have given us a shockingly clearer picture, along with new questions about family lore.
